Older Adults, Advance Care Planning, and Ethical Choices

Location:  Emory University Center for Ethics, 1531 Dickey Drive

Friday, September 7, 2018

9:00 am to 2:00 pm

The Healthcare Ethics Consortium (HEC) at the Emory University Center for Ethics, the Georgia POLST (Physician Orders for Life Sustaining Treatment) Collaborative, and the Georgia Department of Public Health invite you to join us for a half-day meeting to address advance care planning and ethical issues in caring for older adults.

This meeting follows the Joint Summit on Ethical Issues and End-of-Life Care in Long Term Care and Aging Services held on the Emory campus in August 2017, which many of you attended.  We hope to bring select leaders together again to identify and discuss advance care planning discussions and ethical issues encountered by older adults, family members, and healthcare professionals working with older adults.

Topics for discussion and action:

  • Development of a long-term commitment to older adult health and advance care planning
  • Identification of value choices/ethical choices that older adults face
  • Education pathways that respects older adults in healthcare decision making and ethical choice
  • Creation of a data collection model for advance care planning
  • Establishment of a repository for advance care planning documents (e.g., advance directives)
  • Tools to support advance care planning with older adults

We hope that you can join us on September 7 and look forward to hearing from you.
